Workout Description:  50 meter & 100 meter races – Santa Barbara.  Rain showers, cool temperature (50 degrees.  Wet Track)

50 meter – 6.94

100 meter – 13.30*

Summary:
There was a delay in the start of the 50 meter races.  After a 15 min break I did another block start. It was cool and rainy. I tightened up during the break and strained my medial right calf with my first step.   If this were just training I would have shut it down. I considered scratching the 50 race and waiting for the 100, but changed my mind.   I had a tentative start in the 50, ran conservatively and finished with a decent time.

After the 50 race, my right calf was sore and knotted up pretty tight.   I couldn’t get it loose and considered scratching the 100m.    There was a massage therapist available, so right before my heat, I arranged to have it worked on.  It helped temporarily.   I came off the blocks fast, but the calf grabbed.  And, unfortunately, there was a false start in the field.   My second start was too much for the calf, so I basically stood up out of the blocks and ran conservatively the rest of the way.  The calf probably cost me a tenth in the 50 and a few tenths in the 100.

Given the weather and first time in spikes and on the track since July, I’m okay with the 50 meter time.  My goal was to get 6.92 secs (my previous best was 7.04 – 4 years ago.)
Plan:  Continue strength training and increase sprint training.  Prepare for January meets and Indoor Nationals in March.
